Formed just in November of 2002, by presenters/promoters Andrew Kay, David Vigo along with Clifford Hocking, in affiliation with Executive Director/Producer Beverly Bryer and literary Director David Mulovhedzi, Soweto Gospel Choir’s five-year presence has become a plus, multi Award winning feeling.
In 2003 they acquired a Helpmann Award, Australia’s prestigious Performing Arts Award for”Best Contemporary Music Concert.” Back in May 2004 they won the 2003 American Gospel Music Award for”Greatest Choir”, in October they won the 2004 Gospel Music Award (also the US established ) to get”Best Global Choir”, also locally, their introduction CD Voices From Heaven was nominated for a SAMA Award for”Best Traditional Gospel”.
This CD has garnered excellent reviews, with reached the number one spot on Billboard’s World Music Chart, over three months of its US release, debuting at no 3. Their brand newest CD Blessed premiered through Universal Music, in July 2004.
Wherever Soweto Gospel Choir has performed, make it Europe, Singapore, Australia, the UK or the US it’s wowed, viewers. At the Edinburgh Festival, this had been the most effective selling series, with an entirely booked season and elegant reviews. It was recorded because of the critics’ choice in every book. Back in September 2004, Soweto Gospel Choir played three concerts at the Royal Festival Hall in London, accompanied by a national UK tour. At November/December of this calendar year, the choir completed a sellout excursion of Spain, accompanied by performances in Berlin, Stuttgart, and Hamburg.

It’s small wonder they are calculating a meteoric rise to international popularity.
Those who watched the 46664 Concert in Cape Town 2003, under the auspices of former President Nelson Mandela, will probably have observed Soweto Gospel Choir in activity along with other musical greats such as Bono; Queen; Anastacia; Peter Gabriel; Jimmy Cliff; and the Eurythmics.
